Historical flag expert Steve Hill, presents an overview of the variety of military flags carried by both American and British forces during the Revolution.

Join author, teacher and historian, Tom McGuire, as he marches through this significant campaign.

A: African Americans in the Revolutionary Army
Historian and author, Dr. Judy VanBuskirk focuses on her recent work concerning African Americans and their military service.

B: The Lexington Alarm: Examining Day One of the Revolution through Primary Resource Evidence
On April 19, 1775, Massachusetts militiamen and British regulars engaged each other in battle and ignited the American Revolutionary War. Behind the well known legends associated with this “famous day and year” are real facts, real history, and real people. Join Jim Hollister, park ranger, Minute Man National Historical Park, as he uses primary sources to inform our knowledge of this important event.

C: Howe’s Redcoats: The Dress and Military Equipage of the British Army during the 1777 Philadelphia Campaign
James L. Kochan presents the uniforms, arms, and personal gear of the British soldier during this session from initial procurement and issue to field modification, using 18th century records and correspondence, surviving artifacts, and period artwork.

Thomas Fleming, Revolutionary period expert and well known best selling author, presents a session on Washington’s development as a force within Congress during the early moments of the struggle.

B: The War Years: Papers of Washington
Dr. Philander Chase, an editor of the Washington papers project at the University of Virginia, discusses the volumes covering the Revolution.

C: Women in the Revolutionary Period
Noted women’s history author and professor, Dr. Catherine Kerrison, discusses the changing roles of women during the period.

Historian John U. Rees examines the first attempt in 1778 for a draft for the regular Continental Army, told in first-person accounts from original soldier accounts.

B: Making of the American Army
Paul Lockhart, European History expert and author, presents a session on Baron de Steuben and how his experience in the Prussian army shaped the influence he had on the U.S. Armed Forces, an influence that continues to guide them today.

C: Supporting Your Historic Sites
Join a panel discussion of best practices for support organizations for parks and historic sites. Panelists represent small and large organizations.
